Review Layouts Analysis
For the magazine review layouts, we scanned three magazines to gain influence from when we design our own magazine review page. We analysed the layout of all three magazines, making note of the fonts, columns and general arrangement of the page.
Written Form:
A still shot
from a scene in the movie is shown on the review, to analyse that particular
scene. Print indicating film has just
been released. Piece of text which
relates to that scene in the film. Bold font used to emphasise the title of the
film they are reviewing. The age certificate is present to give guidance to the
audience of the level of maturity the film contains and the suitable audience
it is aimed at. The columns are organised very neatly and carefully. This shows
the formal nature of the review as the columns are organised in a mature
manner. A Section of the review page mentions the release date, directors,
screenplay, and actors and then the plot comes underneath. A statistical graph
showing how popular the film is. A verdict is given summarising thoughts from
the reviewer and a star rating is listed to influence reader’s decision.
Written Form
Images are positioned
at the top of the page, the Image is a screen grab from the movie. Another
picture is placed onto the review page from the film to give the audience
further knowledge of what they could expect. There is large, bold to catch your
attention towards the review. This lets you know what the review will be about,
hence the bigger font. The “in cinemas” font notifies the audience the film is
new and available to watch. There is a message on top of picture to give
further insight into film. There is a section of the review page which
mentions, director, cast, running time and plot. aThe plot of the movie is
mentioned also, just a brief summary. It is in a different colour to the
release date, certificate, director, cast and running time. Columns are organised
with release date, plot, certificate, cast and director. A quote is printed to
give emphasis on what they want to show the audience reading about the film, it
is bold and bright to give further emphasis. A verdict is given before you the
stars re awarded. An unbiased review, gives positive and negatives.

Written Form
Black Bold
font is used which gives the review a sophisticated look. The bold is also used
to put emphasis on the film title so it’s clear to the audience that the film
is being reviewed. The columns include the director, film certificate, and
running time. Also features a credits list which includes editor, music
composer and writer of screenplay etc. Small image placed in the right corner
of the review page, image isn’t too important in this review as it is already
detailed. A Synopsis is also displayed to give the audience insight into the
movie.
Amnesia Magazine Draft 1- Hand Drawn
We all came up with a magazine idea name where we had two ideas to name it either Mac & Cheese or Amnesia, but in the end we went with Amnesia as the word is more associated with darker type genres such as psychological thrillers, horrors and slashers etc. We decided to use a screen grab as it is typical of magazines to produce a image from the actual film to grab readers attention to the image as the image takes up quite a lot of space on the review page. On the top left we put "In Cinemas" to indicate that the film is out and available to watch, also on the left hand side we decided to go with film facts to entice the readers into knowing more about the film and get more encouraged to go watch the film. Along with the screen grab with added a bit of text to show what is happening in the screen grab, we then put the film title at the middle of the page as it in a huge text to grab the readers attention as it is in the middle of the review with the 15 certificate alongside it. In the context, we intend to use a pullout of one of the quotes from the review to enlarge it and once again try to get the readers attention.
Amnesia Magazine Draft 2 - Hand Drawn
This second hand drawn draft of the magazine film review is a more clean up version of the first draft, indicating where everything will go. The new additions is the film details along the left bottom hand side containing the release date, directors name, cast and running time. Also we included a star rating out of 5 into the verdict so that readers we see how good or bad the film is.
Amnesia Magazine Review - Draft 1
This is the first draft we did for the magazine review page, we used Black and Red as our main colours on the page as both are generic conventions of Horror movies and we wanted to connote that onto our page, as the movie is of a Horror genre.
Amnesia Magazine Review - Draft 2
We made quite a few minor changes to the second draft, the font colors and overall color of the page were changed in this draft. Also we replaced the stars because the color of white didn't go along with the colors of the page so we replaced it with stars that are red and grey. This time the verdict stays in red because it will show the importance of the verdict and grabs the audience attention to that piece of text the same with IN CINEMAS and Amnesia magazine.
Amnesia Magazine Review - Draft 3
In this draft, we had to remove most of the black from the review as it would be too dark and ain't that visible to most audience or appealing for them to read. Instead we replaced it with a white color to show innocence and purity much more appealing to the wider audience along with black / red / grey color fonts to match the three color schemes of magazine reviews. Also we added a page number at the bottom left of the review magazine because all magazines have page numbers to indicate what page the reader is at, At the top of review we have a star rating at the top saying: one star dire, two star bad, 3 stars decent, 4 stars good and 5 stars a must-see.

Amnesia Magazine Review - Draft 4
In this draft updated from the third draft, we have to remove the context and update it because now the role of "Kate" has been taken by instead arrogant roommate "Kenneth". Also spelling mistakes has been made in the third draft which we corrected in the fourth draft.
Amnesia Magazine Review Pages Draft 5 (Experimenting with different pullout images)
In this draft, we have experimented with different pullout images to seen which image would suit our film review the most along with different pullout image quotes. After receiving feedback, we have decided that the pullout image with Chris looking into the camera should be the pullout image as it attracts the audiences attention and is very visual.

Amnesia Magazine Final Review Page
After receiving feedback from our teacher we decided to change our layout to fit the model of film review pages we have annotated. He said that our previous film review would be 5 out of 10 because it doesn't follow the same conventions of film reviews we have annotated and there is no seen inspiration for the previous review. Therefore we have changed our layout of our review and corrected a few context to fit the needs of our film review. We completely removed the film description section box and inserted it into the columns. Also we enlarged the pull out image, so it covers almost half the page. This follow the same model of the Transformers Review page as i took inspiration from the review page for example the film title, film description and the pullout quote. Also includes the verdict box from the film review of Capote.

RELEASED 31st October 2014
CERTIFICATE 15
DIRECTOR Martin Elesheku
CAST Martin Elesheku, Adam Zaatri, Andre George, Quyen Nguyen.
RUNNING TIME 5 Minutes
PLOT After the death of Chris’s nephew Josh, Chris goes home with Josh’s favourite doll Corky for remembrance. Chris, Samuel and Kenneth then begin to experience the supernatural. Not realizing until the end the true horror and terror that is slowly approaching.
Chris (Elesheku) is arriving home from Chris’ nephews funeral. “Funeral” all very cliché right? Anyway, upon arriving they get a visit from Samuel (George) ,the father of Josh who is deeply saddened by the death.
Andre George plays the role of ‘Samuel’ perfectly and helps to light the spark in the movie. Martin Elesheku directs the movie and I must say, for a seventeen year old director he does a great job. He perfectly portrays Corky as the ultimate villain, frightening in every way. Now if you’re interested in films with creepy and devious dolls, then this is the film for you.
Corky takes joy in making people’s lives a misery and Elesheku presents this greatly through camera usage. Kenneth is the stereotypical funny guy, a typical convention of horrors as there is always someone who doesn't give a ‘flying monkeys’ and finds the humor in everything.
Adam Zaatri plays ‘Kenneth’ the comedic roommate of Chris and he does a pretty good job, as he captures his role well, although he does come across as a psychopath, not seeming to care when he sees the dead body. Chris and Kenneth's relationship is similar to many movies such as “Phantasm 2” (1988) and “The Lost Boys” (1987).
If there is any criticism that could be made, it would be Martin Elesheku performance as ‘Chris’ as he doesn't express his emotions effectively through facial expressions and body language. Maybe its because of the burden of directing as well as acting in the movie, which explains his poor performance. Apart from that blip, Corky has so many exciting and intriguing twists to the plot, it will literally leave you at the edge of your seat.
Quyen Nguyen
VERDICT Thrilling, terrifying and heart pumping. If Elesheku’s performance was as good as his direction, we would have a great film on our hands.
