Short Film - Research & Planning

The Pitch - Martin

Resources for Mise-en-scene

The locations

Ø House- a house is a place that most people feel most secure making it a very effective setting for a horror film. Filming in a house is typical of our genre conventions as a house is the one place you’re supposed to feel safe but in our film, and in many other horror films, will be presented in the complete opposite purpose. We will be inside so we will not have to worry about a background noise/s.

Props

Ø Knife – this is a classic convention of the genre, we may have the doll use this to make it more alive and scary. For safety reasons we will only use it when needed and only inside.

Ø Doll – the doll is the where the main horror aspect is focused on. We will use lighting and cinematography to bring it to life.

Ø Fake blood – as this is a horror film and there is death involved it is typical to have blood as it goes with the genre conventions of the Horror genre.

Costume, hair, make-up

Ø Chris will be wearing white this portrays him to be an innocent person in the film and “White” symbolises purity and peace.  Kenneth is wearing nothing specific to the genre so he dons casual clothes

Ø Samuel will be wearing black clothes. This identifies him as targets as the colour "black" has connotations of danger and death.

Lighting

We are going to be using low key lighting for our film because it is typically used in horror films to add a more effective effect. We are going to try and do this by using the lights available in the house for example lamps and torches.

Description of narrative structure and use of film language

The film begins with the main character Chris  arriving home after returning from the funeral of his nephew who recently passed away due to illness. He comes home to be greeted by his roommate who tries to comfort him but Chris is still saddened by his close relatives passing and mentions how he only has the doll that belonged to him as a token of his memory. Kenneth continuously tries to brush it off his mind and it finally works when Chris puts the doll down.

After this scene Chris takes a breather and relaxes by watching the film child's play little does he know that a shadow was creeping up behind him. But before the outcome is seen there is a knock on his door. He goes to open it and sees that it is his brother Samuel who was Josh's father.
He invites him in and gives him a drink which leads to Samuel to remember what he came to talk about. he first reminisces on how Chris was close to josh and says he has an idea on what killed him. This surprises Chris as he thought that he died of illness. Samuel gives Chris his theories why he thinks the doll is connected to his sons death but before he could finish his sentence there is a loud noise heard in the kitchen which gains the attention of both men.
Chris gets up to go check what it is only to discover that there is a pile cutlery on the table in a mess and kitchen ornaments have be thrown about. after discovering this he believes that Kenneth made the mess in the kitchen and goes upstairs to ask him. While Chris is upstairs Samuel is trying to keep his sanity by reminding himself that this is not real. This breaks when he turns to see the doll on the sofa looking at him.
At first he is shunned seeing the doll there but then approaches it, trying to remind himself that it can't be alive unaware of the knife the doll holds in its back and with this the doll kills Samuel and places his corpse in the cupboard. Kenneth tells Chris that he didn't make a mess in the kitchen which frustrates him because he knows what type of person Kenneth is but walks back downstairs. Upon walking downstairs he discovers a trail of blood which shocks him leaving him no option but to follow where it leads.
He follows the trail to his cupboard which he reluctantly opens and upon his gruesome discovery he finds Samuel's dead body. Kenneth hears his yell and comes downstairs also shocked by the blood. He joins Chris by the compartment and sees Samuel's  body only to try and blame Chris for his death which angers him but unwilling to deal with the problem he walks away as he cannot deal with the pain of losing another family member. Kenneth tries to talk to him but before he has the chance the lights go out. Kenneth starts to panic but Chris reassures him that its something normal but Kenneth panicking only gets worse when he feels something touch his leg. Chris wanting to believe its normal until he starts to whine and moan in pain.
Kenneth unaware of what is happening to his friend tries to console with him but to no avail. Chris is being taken over by the doll. This was its ambition. Chris stops moaning and stands completely still. Kenneth takes out his phone and puts a Flash on Chris. he asks him how he is but Chris is different as Kenneth realises when he talks. Unable to move fast Kenneth is attacked by him with the same knife the doll had. Chris kills him and all that is heard is his laughter. The now possessed Chris looks towards the audience and introduces himself thus leading to the end.

The Mise-En-Scene

The setting of our film would be set in a working middle class house during the night as it leads audiences to believe that nothing will harm them in their own home but are very mistaken. The props that will be used in our film will be the doll itself as the main prop, the fake blood for the trail of blood which leads to the cupboard and finally a knife which the doll uses to kill Samuel. The lighting will low key high contrast as the darkness will add to the suspense and build a horrific atmosphere. The costumes that Chris will be wearing casual clothes with a white shirt to show a sense of formality. Samuel will wear a black shirt to show that he is a target due to the genre conventions of the colour black connote to danger. Kenneth will dressed in casual clothes to match his persona.

CINEMATOGRAHPY

The camera shots that will consist in our film will from the beginning will be a combination of both medium and medium close ups to capture both of the main characters and their actions. There are also many POV shots used in our film for the audience have the same experience with what the characters are feeling. The medium shots will continue once the characters have entered the house. During Kenneth' s and Chris conversation there is a High angle medium shot used from Chris perspective and a low angle shot used from Kenneth's perspective. There will also be a panning shot to follow Chris as he opens the door for Samuel. The medium shots continue when they are having their conversation until it is broken by a long shot from the kitchen showing both of the characters at a distance. POV shot of Chris entering the kitchen medium shots of her picking up the doll. There is a slow pan when she is looking for the source of noises. There will be a medium long shot of Chris heading upstairs to get to talk to Kenneth about the mess. There will be a close up of Samuel trying to regain his sanity while Chris goes upstairs. Again there is a POV shot of Chris when he discovers Samuels’s body.

There will again be a POV shot of Kenneth looking at Chris after he has been possessed by the doll .

Sound

At the beginning when the title shows there will be slow and eerie non diegetic music to make the audience feel unease. There will be off screen diegetic sound used for the utensils during the scene where Chris hears noises in the kitchen. There will also be slow paced non diegetic music playing during Chris struggle with the doll. The off screen diegetic laughter that is heard at the end. There will also be slow tense rising non-diegetic music when Samuel approaches the doll.

Editing

The film will mostly consist of straight cuts but there are some scenes in which this may differ. There will be a fade in at the start from the title and production name to cohort with the dark setting. There will be a fade to show the transition of time from one scene to the next. Another use of editing will be the cut to black ending used to bring an open ending for the audience to guess what happened to the characters. Mostly slow paced during the scenes to build up more suspense and to make it easier for the audience to understand what is happening.

Purpose

The purpose for our movie is to entertain younger viewers and fans of the horror who have a taste for the supernatural of inanimate objects. We did not want to copy the Chucky's image but simply learn from it and see what makes the audience terrified of a child's toy. It is also to provide a thrill ride for the audience. “Corky” is created to make a timeless narrative that can be watched for many years to come by audiences of the horror movie genre.

Target audience

Our target audience are people between the ages of 15-25. This is the typical audience for the horror genre as it is not very likely that those above the age of 30 are going to watch a horror film. This is also because they are usually the age used in horror films and become prime targets because of their place in society as they are teenagers/young adults and are the future generation.

Reece report
The only location we will be using for our film is a house. We are using a house because it is typical for the horror genre. It provides a sense of security which we want to disrupt. The benefits of this location are that it will be available most of the time.

This is the living room. This is where most of the film will take place so it is vital that we get the spacing right so we have the right angles and framing.  As we are recording over different periods of time objects might move this could potentially break continuity. Furthermore lighting may be difficult as one of the lights are broken and the over isn’t very bright. To overcome this we will take pictures so we know what is where, we will also uses lamps to brighten up the room when necessary.

This is the kitchen. It is where the strange mishaps will start. It is the source of an important props it is also a good means to divert attention. It is good because it has good lighting. The kitchen is very small and so spacing for the camera will be tight. We will try to overcome this by making as much space as we can.
