Description of narrative structure and use of film language

The film begins with the main character Chris  arriving home after returning from the funeral of his nephew who recently passed away due to illness. He comes home to be greeted by his roommate who tries to comfort him but Chris is still saddened by his close relatives passing and mentions how he only has the doll that belonged to him as a token of his memory. Kenneth continuously tries to brush it off his mind and it finally works when Chris puts the doll down.

After this scene Chris takes a breather and relaxes by watching the film child's play little does he know that a shadow was creeping up behind him. But before the outcome is seen there is a knock on his door. He goes to open it and sees that it is his brother Samuel who was Josh's father.
He invites him in and gives him a drink which leads to Samuel to remember what he came to talk about. he first reminisces on how Chris was close to josh and says he has an idea on what killed him. This surprises Chris as he thought that he died of illness. Samuel gives Chris his theories why he thinks the doll is connected to his sons death but before he could finish his sentence there is a loud noise heard in the kitchen which gains the attention of both men.
Chris gets up to go check what it is only to discover that there is a pile cutlery on the table in a mess and kitchen ornaments have be thrown about. after discovering this he believes that Kenneth made the mess in the kitchen and goes upstairs to ask him. While Chris is upstairs Samuel is trying to keep his sanity by reminding himself that this is not real. This breaks when he turns to see the doll on the sofa looking at him.
At first he is shunned seeing the doll there but then approaches it, trying to remind himself that it can't be alive unaware of the knife the doll holds in its back and with this the doll kills Samuel and places his corpse in the cupboard. Kenneth tells Chris that he didn't make a mess in the kitchen which frustrates him because he knows what type of person Kenneth is but walks back downstairs. Upon walking downstairs he discovers a trail of blood which shocks him leaving him no option but to follow where it leads.
He follows the trail to his cupboard which he reluctantly opens and upon his gruesome discovery he finds Samuel's dead body. Kenneth hears his yell and comes downstairs also shocked by the blood. He joins Chris by the compartment and sees Samuel's  body only to try and blame Chris for his death which angers him but unwilling to deal with the problem he walks away as he cannot deal with the pain of losing another family member. Kenneth tries to talk to him but before he has the chance the lights go out. Kenneth starts to panic but Chris reassures him that its something normal but Kenneth panicking only gets worse when he feels something touch his leg. Chris wanting to believe its normal until he starts to whine and moan in pain.
Kenneth unaware of what is happening to his friend tries to console with him but to no avail. Chris is being taken over by the doll. This was its ambition. Chris stops moaning and stands completely still. Kenneth takes out his phone and puts a Flash on Chris. he asks him how he is but Chris is different as Kenneth realises when he talks. Unable to move fast Kenneth is attacked by him with the same knife the doll had. Chris kills him and all that is heard is his laughter. The now possessed Chris looks towards the audience and introduces himself thus leading to the end.

The Mise-En-Scene

The setting of our film would be set in a working middle class house during night as it leads audiences to believe that nothing will harm them in their own home but are very mistaken. The props that will be used in our film will be the doll itself as the main prop, the fake blood for the trail of blood which leads to the cupboard and finally a knife which the doll uses to kill Samuel. The lighting will low key high contrast as the darkness will add to the suspense and build a horrific atmosphere. The costumes that Chris will be wearing casual clothes with a white shirt to show a sense of formality. Chris will wear a black suit while Kate wears a black dress. Samuel will have a red top with jeans. When Chris comes downstairs he will now be wearing his pyjamas. In terms of makeup Kate would have red lipstick on.

CINEMATOGRAHPY

The camera shots that will consist in our film will from the beginning will be a combination of both medium and medium close ups to capture both of the main characters and their actions. The medium shots will continue once the characters have entered the house but once Chris heads upstairs and there will be a panning shot to follow Kate as she opens the door for Samuel. The medium shots continue when they are having their conversation until it is broken by a long shot from the kitchen showing both of the characters at a distance. POV shot of Kate entering the kitchen medium shots of her picking up the doll. There is a slow pan when she is looking for the source of noises. There will be a long shot of Kate heading upstairs to get Chris. Medium close up of Samuel checking himself out in the mirror. Over shoulder shot of him realising the doll and close up of him holding the doll. Close up on Samuels’s body when it is discovered by Kate.

There will be a medium shot of Kate and Chris embracing after the encounter with the doll. Final scene will be a close up of Chris psychotic face as he attacks Kate.

Sound

At the beginning when the title shows there will be slow and eerie non diegetic music to make the audience feel unease. The off screen diegetic sound will be used for the utensils and cupboard doors during the scene where Kate hears noises in the kitchen. The non-diegetic jump scare sound effect that is used when Kate discovers Samuel’s body. There will also be high paced non diegetic music playing during Chris struggle with the doll. The off screen diegetic laughter that is heard at the end. Slow tense rising non-diegetic music when Samuel approaches the doll

Editing

The film will mostly consist of straight cuts but there are some scenes in which this may differ. There will be a fade in at the start from the title and production name to add to the dark setting. There will be two jump cuts towards the doll face one when Samuel discovers it and the other will be when Chris discovers it. Another use of editing in our film will be when the doll is trying to take over Chris and his voice will start to change which will be from the use of dubbing. Another use of editing will be when the evil hint in the dolls eyes appear in Chris’s eyes which can be done by effects. Another use of editing will be the cut to black ending used to bring an open ending for the audience as they do not know what happened next. Mostly slow paced during the scenes to build up more suspense and to make it easier for the audience to understand what is happening. There will be cross cuts from Kate to Samuel showing the different events which are taking place and building up to the conclusion.
